“If it’s possible, I wouldn’t mind giving this another try.” General Kato grinned as he looked expectantly at Yuko.

The colonel’s and lieutenant’s heads jerked up at the same time with looks of anticipation mixed with a healthy dose of trepidation.

Watabe chuckled. “It’s not as easy as I made it look, old friend.”

“It can’t be that difficult. You managed,” Kato shot back.

“Don’t say I didn’t warn you when you get rolled under like the minister here did.” Watabe nodded at the mangled body on the floor. “I don’t want to get an earful from my sister when you come home griping about how it’s my fault you can’t walk straight.”

“Bah, I’m a trained professional warrior. I know I can kill these things better than a jumped-up beat cop, and I’ll look better doing it too.” Kato grinned.

Yonai and the colonel exchanged confused looks. Both jumped when Nikko burst out laughing. “The Prime Minister told me you two would turn this into a competition before it was over. He tells stories about the lengths you went to outdo each other when you were schoolboys together. Now you’re two of the most powerful men in Japan, and you still act like kids.”

“Sato has no room to talk. He was right there with us most days.” Kato looked at Watabe for agreement.

“He started it as often as not,” Watabe agreed. “Why’d he send you today, Nikko? I figured he’d jump at the chance to come and play with us.”

“He wanted to,” Nikko replied. “Unfortunately, he has a meeting with a Russian trade delegation today. The new ships that the Seawolf company is running have opened the possibilities of trade for them, and they want to take advantage of it. He would have canceled if he could, but the Russians have oil, and we need it.”

Both men nodded knowingly as Nikko explained why their friend was absent.

“What do you propose? You’ve had more time with this,” Kato looked at Watabe expectantly.

“Yonai, what do you think would be fair? I don’t want him crying foul when I beat him.”

“Honestly, sir, I can’t say. You’ve completed a level, and the general has only watched one operation and this demonstration,” Yonai offered, obviously uncomfortable with the request.

“Commissioner-General,” Yuko called. “The program has a wave feature. We used it in testing the range of motion for the tigers and the relative effectiveness of the different weapons. It starts with a single tiger, and the number and speed increase as you complete each wave. The last man standing wins.”

Watabe looked at Kato for agreement. Kato nodded once, and Watabe smiled at Yuko. “That sounds perfect.”

“Lieutenant, your weapon, please. I love this thing,” Kato patted the grenade launcher, “but I think the rifle will be the better weapon for me to show this old amateur how the real warriors do it.”

“Amateur? And you’re older than I am.” Watabe laughed. “Care to make a wager on it?”

Kato thought for a minute and grinned mischievously. “A bottle of Toko Junmai-daiginjo.”

Watabe looked impressed. “If you have fifty thousand yen lying around to buy me a bottle of sake, I’m game.
